FAMILY VISIT FROM HOLLAND 1980’S

We waited for a clear day, there we were standing at the Mountain Railway not a cloud in the sky and two hundred people in front of us, not a problem, off Sue went and bought two tickets. Right she says, three o clock train, lets go back to the van for a few hours in the sun. All day the sun shone so at two fifteen we make our way to Llanberis for the three o clock train arriving at two forty five, we join the queue and ask the lady in front what time train she was waiting for, Half past twelve she replies, there has been a fault, they are running late. Alas no journey that day but the ticket man advised us that the forecast for tomorrow was the same so we again booked for ten o clock and went off home.

The following morning we look out and cloud fills the sky, well we have the tickets so off we  go to Llanberis, still cloudy we board the train hopeful that by the time we get to the top the cloud will be gone. One rickety hour later we arrive at the new summit station in a mist that obscured everything from view, even the summit station and in a temperature so low that it was uncomfortable for everybody. Right into the cafe for a brew, the cloud will soon be gone. Two teas and a pasty later having been financially mugged we wander outside to once again vanish into the cloud and stand like all the other fools on the summit looking at nothing, camera ready in case there is a sudden gust of wind and the cloud disappears. Right Sue I said, it is too cold to hang around here lets go and off we went poles in hand into the mist, the descent steep in places and treacherous under foot soon to see the clouds disappear when we reached half way down the  mountain and when we reached the bottom we looked up and no cloud at all,

September 2010 we decided on a walk on Snowdon, a reverse ascent up on train down on foot

SNOWDON ADVENTURE 2010

I was born in Holland in 1948 shortly after the war, my parents having met while both in the armed forces stationed in London, my father being with the Dutch Military police.

The family originally lived in the Midlands where Alan was born and then soon after relocated to Holland to live in Heiligerlee for a few years where I was born, as my parents did not register my birth with the UK embassy I was then a Dutchman, after three years and a couple of visits from my mothers parents it was decided that they would relocate back to England where Dave , Mike and Tina were born so now I had four English siblings and me the Dutchman. Now you would not think this a problem and it wasn’t until I decided to go on my first foreign holiday at the age of 23 years when I went with Sue to Austria. On our return the border agency took an instant dislike to me as I had a Dutch passport and with all fifty people on our tour looking on proceeded to humiliate me only letting me in when I told the man that I had a job and spoke better English than

Him, after this I applied for naturalisation and a further bout of humiliation, whereupon I am now a Bigenglishman but Bigdutchman sound better.

The name Bigdutchman comes from me being originally born in Holland and slightly portly
